High Voltage Distribution Systems and Equipment

Properly designed, operated and maintained electrical distribution system is a vital element in safety and reliability of an electrical system in an industrial plant. This course covers 5kV – 36kV distribution systems found in a typical industrial plant.

Topics covered include basic distribution system designs, typical equipment used, and basic maintenance of those equipment and safety issues associated with high voltage distribution system.

Day 1
Basics of Power Distribution System Design

    • Single line diagrams

    • Normal, Emergency and Critical Power Systems
    • System Grounding

This section starts with single line diagrams and electrical symbols used for distribution equipment, Both IEC and NEC symbols are covered. Design criteria considered in the layout of an electrical distribution system is explained. Basic fault calculations and the importance of fault levels in the selection of equipment are explained in the above topics. Pros and cons of various distribution system layouts and system grounding are covered.

In this section covers switchgear layout, rating and features of distribution switchboards. It includes SF6 and vacuum circuit breakers, distribution transformer design and operating characteristics.     


Day 3
Power Distribution Safety and Maintenance

    • Shock protection
    • Lightning protection
    • Arc flash
    • Switchgear design for Arc flash protection
    • Distribution System maintenance

This section covers the operation and characteristics of power fuses. Design of HV power cables and methods of splicing and terminating them in equipment is discussed. Typical safety considerations such as grounding, lightening protection, shock protection and arc flash safety to NFPA 70E is explained. Basic maintenance requirements for switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers and cable systems are also covered.

This course is designed for electrical technicians, maintenance planners, and supervisors with operation and maintenance responsibilities who work in an industrial plant.
