UPS and Battery Banks

Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS) are used in the power systems in the oil and gas industry to power critical equipment that are associated with safety and operation of the plant. UPS are used to power ESD, PSD, F&G detection and emergency lighting in a plant.

This course has been designed to provide participants with an understanding of the information that is required for the proper construction, operation, and maintenance of UPS and battery banks.

Upon completion of this course, participants should have a better understanding of the technology related to UPS and battery banks within the industry.  Having this knowledge will help each technician develop confidence and professional enthusiasm, therefore, increasing their efficiency. The knowledge that technicians gained from this course will be further expanded by on-job training and practical experience they will receive throughout the duration of their career.

Day 1
Uninterruptable Power Supplies

    • UPS topologies and application
    • Components in AC UPS
    • Components in DC UPS
    • Application for DC UPS

On the first day, participants will be introduced why UPS are used and the types of UPS systems available in the market for various applications. The course focuses “Online/double-conversion” type UPS, the most common type found in industrial power supply systems. Construction including rating and operation of the rectifier, inverter and static switch is explained. The layout of DC UPS systems is also covered.

Day 2
Battery Banks

    • Basic secondary cell
    • Charging and discharge characteristics
    • Battery Safety
    • Maintenance of UPS

On this day principles behind the operation of secondary cells as well as comparison of the “pros and cons” of various battery chemistry will be covered. The participants will learn about lead-acid batteries, including their construction and their charging and discharging characteristics. Typical safety requirements while working with battery banks will be covered including typical maintenance requirements for UPS and battery banks.

This course is designed for electrical technicians, maintenance planners, and supervisors with operation and maintenance responsibilities who work in an industrial plant.
