Calibration is defined as a test during which known values of measurand are applied to the transducer and corresponding output readings are recorded under specified conditions. The responsibility of the instrument technician is to follow the proper calibration procedures to accurately calibrate the instrument. With the large volumes of product processed in industry today, the accuracy of the instrumentation is critical in operating a safe and economically viable process. Every piece of instrumentation requires verification and calibration within a specified time frame. Verification and calibration procedures are dependent on the type of instrument being calibrated.
This course has been designed to introduce participants to the basic principles of verification and calibration. They will learn about the responsibilities of the instrument technician and the importance of accuracy and documentation. The participants will gain knowledge in the various calibration procedures of various types of measuring instruments and the more complex final control elements and on-stream analyzers.
Upon completion of the course participants will have a better understanding of the technology and methods associated with verification and calibration. They will have gained a better knowledge of its purpose and importance in the operations cycle. With the knowledge gained, technicians will be able to expand their skills through on-the-job training as well as practical experience gained at the plant site.

- Calibration Procedures
On day 1, participants will learn about the basic concepts of calibration and verification of a measuring device and final control element. They will be made aware of the responsibilities of the instrument technician to follow procedures properly and maintain accurate documentation. They will also review the common characteristics of calibration procedures as well as the options available to perform these calibrations.
Day 2
Calibrating Instruments
- Temperature and Pressure devices
- Level and Flow Devices
- Final Control Elements
- Analyzers
On day 2, participants will become familiar with the basic calibration procedures of the four main measuring instruments - temperature, pressure, level and flow. They will also be exposed to the calibration of final control elements such as control valves as well as be made aware of the extended complexity of calibration procedures such as those used in analyzer equipment.
This course is mainly targeted to instrumentation technicians working in the field as an introduction or refresher.
The course can be applicable to technicians working in other disciplines, equipment purchasers, procurement and storage personnel, job planners and immediate supervisors.
