This course will provide the trainee with the knowledge necessary to understand and enhance their mechanical aptitude in the area of Piping Testing and Diagnostics.
The purpose of this course is to develop a working knowledge of various testing procedures and the science behind this testing. To inspect and analyze failures and failure rate it is important to understand these procedures. With the completion of this course the participants are equipped with the basic knowledge required to test and diagnose problems associated with piping, the construction and design of piping and associated components.
Technicians in the Petroleum Industry are required to have good technical knowledge of Pipe Maintenance and Repair. The technicians that participate in this training will be better equipped to assist in testing and inspection procedures. Proper knowledge of testing and inspections will aid in better maintenance procedures as well as providing solid diagnostics. Being able to understand and provide assistance in testing, whether destructive or no-destructive increase the knowledge within the maintenance team. This will provide the maintenance team safe and efficient productivity of the mechanical systems. With further on-job training and experience the technician will be able to attend more advanced training in this area therefore enhancing the maintenance team’s capabilities and knowledge.

The following Topics will be covered allowing the Technician a much stronger understanding of the Operation and Maintenance of Machinery and Equipment in the Petroleum Industry
The course will begin with a review of the course outline and the daily activities scheduled for each day.
Day 1 – Testing Part A
- Review the following types of destructive testing
- Differentiate between destructive and non-destructive testing of material.
- Define the ultimate tensile strength.
- Describe the principle involved in testing the steel toughness.
- Describe the free-bend test used in weld testing
- Tensile test

- Impact test

- Magnetic Particulate Testing

Day 2 – Testing Part B
In Class Project/Presentation
(This could be through in-class demonstrations or introducing specimens or test pieces of pipes for review and presentations)
- Perform visual inspection on a welded pipe specimen and summarize the results through discussion and/or presentation.
- Demonstrate through discussion and/or presentation how a dye penetrant is used in determining the soundness of a weld area in flanges or pipe connections.
This course will provide the trainee with a good understanding of proper testing related to piping and their associated components including repair and the theory behind the construction, design and application. The trainee will learn information and construction, design including maintenance and diagnostics. It is important that the trainee have completed Hydro Testing and Detection of Valves prior to attending this training.
This course is mainly targeted to Mechanical Technicians in Oil and Gas industry working in the field as an introduction or refresher.
